It’s had many significant updates since I purchased it, highly recommended. MotionX GPS is one of my favorite iPhone apps. It looks like their site offers many other forms of conversion and map creation as well. But for now thanks to GPS Visualizer for offering a useful service. There may be FAR easier ways to accomplish this - if you know one please let me know. You’ll see a new entry on the log page in MotionX GPS and when you open it up you’ll see something like the map included here. That’s it, the GPX information is imported into MotionX GPS. Open their email response on your iPhone and tap the link. Send your downloaded file to and they’ll reply with a specially created link.
The GPX file is added to your iPhone by email. Check your Downloads folder and make sure the file name ends with.

Once you click Convert on the form above you’ll be given a link to download the GPX file. (Instead of using directions you can use the link from a place on the map, in which case MotionX GPS will import a waypoint) I only needed to paste in the link and select GPX as the output format, as indicated. Here’s a look at the form I filled out on the GPS Visualizer site. When I was done with the route on the iPhone I had to delete the waypoints one by one, so fewer waypoints means less cleanup later. If you find yourself driving to a lot of remote trailheads far away from cell phone coverage, this might be a good navigation trick to have in your toolbox. This can confirm your exact location, which fork you took on that last intersection, and keep a record of any change in your route (locked gates, washouts, logging road change, etc.)
You can also record a track of your route when you’re driving. However, once you have a GPX track of your driving route, and a quality GPS app on your phone like Gaia GPS, you can choose whatever map base layer desired (topo, satellite, Forest Service, Open Street Map) you like. You can annotate maps with additional navigation notes, such as good car camping spots, locked gates, private property, etc. Google maps has no terrain or contours shown, so it can be trickier to see your precise location. The map detail can be significantly reduced, even if you download the map. Outside of cell phone coverage, Google maps can do some strange things.
